Councilor Pushes for Vendor Ownership at Old Book Market

City councilor Saurabh Joshi stated that the leasehold ownership policy, which is crucial for providing stability and security for the vendors, is already in effect in other city markets, such as Patel Market, Shastri Market, and Krishna Market.

In an effort to address the long-standing requests of the vendors, city councillor Saurabh Joshi headed a delegation from the Old Book Market Association (OBMA) and met with municipal commissioner Amit Kumar on Wednesday. Joshi requested the transformation of the vendors’ areas in the Old Book Market from a licensee status to leasehold ownership.

Joshi emphasized that the leasehold ownership policy, vital for the stability and security of the vendors, is already being applied in other local markets, including Patel Market, Shastri Market, and Krishna Market.

“The Old Book Market is an essential aspect of Chandigarh’s cultural legacy. Granting ownership rights through the leasehold system will not only secure the livelihoods of the vendors but will also create substantial revenue for the municipal corporation, as the vendors are willing to pay the necessary amount for the conversion of ownership,” Joshi remarked.

Kumar assured the group that their issues would be examined with legal advice and advanced to the Chandigarh administration.
